General Information
Plettenberg Bay is one of South Africa’s most diverse bays as the sheltered, warm waters attract a multitude of marine species - from the endangered African Oystercatcher to juvenile Hammerhead sharks and thousands of Common dolphins – into the bay to feed.
Our local skippers and tour guides provide a personalized service and give insight into the wide spectrum of marine life and geology of the area. The tour begins with a unique dry launch into the surf zone and ends with a ride straight back onto the beach! Being an environmentally conscious eco-marine operation, all our cruises are carried out according to a strict code of conduct.
We offer two different types of Dolphin & Whale watching cruises, namely DISCOVERY CRUISES and PREMIUM CRUISES.
Discovery cruises are run on our boats which do not hold permits and are legally obliged to stay 300 meters from whales. These cruises operate all year around.
Premium cruises are “close encounter” tours which are conducted on our permitted whale watching vessel “Fatboy”. This permit allows our licensed boat to approach whales up to 50 metres. Whales are usually inquisitive and generally move closer to alongside the boat!
Both cruises are essentially the same as we take special notice of all marine activity in the area. We ride alongside dolphins, visit the seals, identify the seabirds, and observe the sharks and other marine species that may be around! Our records show that OCEAN SAFARIS see more animals than anywhere else in the country!
Whale season generally runs between July and November and is based on the presence of Southern Right Whales along our coastline. However, we are very fortunate to have the Humpback Whales between April and January and the Bryde’s whales all year round, so you will always have the chance of getting ‘up close and personal’ with whales in South Africa!
Ocean Safaris also offers its clients an information centre and internet café. The closest doctor is 5 minutes away.
