This was the Africa of which we had always dreamed. Vast open plains, spectacular sunsets and star-filled African skies.

Children’s Facilities & Policy

Children of all ages are welcome at Samara Private Game Reserve and we will endeavour to ensure that families travelling together have a memorable bush experience.

For the convenience of all guests at the Reserve, and the safety of the children, children under eight years of age may not go on Game Drives with the other Lodge guests. Children under the age of eight are cared for at the lodge and special children’s activities are arranged. We are happy to arrange a special vehicle for families with children of this age. This is charged at an additional cost of R1000 per day. Please note that whilst we cannot guarantee that a vehicle will be available (for example, if the Lodge is fully booked), we have always been able to make provision for young children to enjoy the bush with their parents.

Apart from the swimming pool and tennis courts, which the children may obviously use, there are many walks they can do – to the ancient fossil site for example. We can also organise educational games that fuel the childrens’ enthusiasm for the bush, while educating them about the environment. We will organize tracking exercises, animal identification competitions and so on. Treasure hunts are arranged in the wonderful grounds of the Lodge (which has sweeping lawns on which to play.)

There are times when, for conservation purposes, we will have cheetah in enclosures, known as bomas. In such instances, our rangers will be happy to organize drives for the children to visit these beautiful animals to see them up close.

When a ranger is available, the little ones are taken on a mini-drive on the reserve, which would last for about an hour (as opposed to the 3 to 4 hour dives, which are sometimes a bit lengthy for small children), and the focus is on the children and what they observe.

The emphasis at Samara is on endangered species of animals, therefore the attitude of the rangers and staff is unique – the focus is on learning and preservation more than on fleeting “sensation”, and children are avid learners.

The Lodge has a magnificent Library, extremely well stocked with books and magazines for both children and adults, and the wrap-around verandah is a perfect place for reading or bird-watching. The Lodge staff are all very knowledgeable and there is always someone on hand to help identify the birds and other creatures (such as tortoises) which come close to the Lodge.

The fresh air and physical activity, as well as the good food (special kiddies menus may be arranged), make for very contented children, who do not tend to stay up late at night, although they do love the lessons on the stars in this glorious, clear Karoo night sky!

So far, the children who have stayed at the Lodge have really loved every minute, and have had enormous fun learning about our beautiful world in a very practical manner.

Accommodation

Three Karoo Suites are in cottages a few steps from the main lodge and can accommodate 1 extra child bed each.

One of the original farmhouses, now called The Karoo Lodge, consists of 3 luxury suites which are ideal for travelling families. All the suites are decorated in a quietly updated colonial style, reflecting Eastern Cape history. Each suite is complete with a large en-suite bathroom and shower, air-conditioning and private porch offering fantastic views from the wraparound veranda. Karoo Lodge can accommodate up to 12 guests, keeping it intimate and exclusive.

Camdeboo Manor is an exclusive use Villa which accommodates up to 8 people and families are welcome.

Dining

Children are full catered for at Samara and the chef will design a kids menu dependant on the clients tastes

General Facilities

If you want the best-ever views of the night sky, go to the Great Karoo, the arid and remote heartland of South Africa. Samara Private Game Reserve covers 28, 000 hectares of virgin wilderness, encompassing mountains and high valleys that descend to the vast plains of Camdeboo surrounding Graaff Reinet, a whitewashed town famous for its 18-th century architecture.

The reserve opened in November 2005 after many years spent rehabilitating the former farm land and restocking with cheetah (a major attraction here), rare mountain zebra, white rhino and plains game such as kudu, eland and black wildebeest. You can be quite alone at Samara, out of sight of anything manmade. At night you will have the Milky Way for company, and by day wild animals and a breathtaking landscape. Ask about the fossils dating back 250 million years, and the 700-year-old shepherd trees. There are daily drives in open Land Rovers and there’s a pool to cool off in.

The diverse landscape of Samara is breathtaking. It includes four of South Africa’s seven biomes: Grassland, Nama Karoo, Thicket and Savannah. The area is free from malaria and other tropical diseases. Activities include game drives in open game drives, guided walks, bird watching and cheetah tracking by foot. Children under 12 years are welcome at Samara and children’s activities can be arranged. Regrettably children under 8 years are not allowed on game drives, unless a dedicated vehicle has been arranged.
