General Facilities

In prehistoric times, from about 130,000 to 30,000 years ago, early man in Zululand lived in caves high up in the Lebombo Mountains. Their diet was varied because they exploited the resources of the sea, as well as hunted animals on the land. Today, however, we can offer our guests in Zululand far more comfortable accommodation in Hluhluwe than the old caves. Instead of exploiting our resources, our guests can relax and enjoy the true South African country cuisine whilst viewing all our resources.

The accommodation is enhanced by facilities which encourage our guests to unwind, relax and enjoy the spectacular surroundings. These include a swimming pool, lapa and boma, restaurant and bar, a Beauty and Holistic Therapist, a curio shop, housekeeping and laundry facilities, fax facilities and airport transfers.

Emdoneni offers excellent bird watching and soul-inspiring walking and hiking trails. Emdoneni has its very own Animal Care & Rehabilitation Centre. The aim of the project is to care for cats which have been orphaned or injured in the wild and are in need of care and rehabilitation. We also intend to breed, where possible, and release the offspring back into their natural habitat.  Current species: Cheetah; Serval; African Wild Cat; Caracal (Lynx).

A visit to the Emdoneni Animal Care & Rehabilitation Centre includes an informative talk about the project and its animals by a professional guide. Animals are fed at 4:30 pm daily which visitors are welcome to view.  The centre has grown well in the last year, with two young Cheetahs, six Caracal (Lynx) and five African Wildcat joining the project. We are now able to offer guests the opportunity to view four of the seven cat species found in Africa.

Activities at Emdoneni and in the nearby areas include:
  1. Guided game drives in open vehicles into the Hluhluwe/iMfolozi Game Reserves
  2. Walks with tame cats
  3. Pine-apple and sugar cane farm tours
  4. Deep sea fishing
  5. Boat trips on Lake St Lucia
  6. The Dumazulu Cultural Village
  7. Ilala Weavers
  8. Horse riding
  9. Game drives in Mkuze Game Reserve
  10. Kayaking
  11. Scuba diving at Sodwana Bay
  12. Snorkelling
Along the coral reefs which flank the Maputo land coastline, inland lakes and estuaries hosting vast numbers of hippopotamus, crocodile and fish, our wildlife heritage is ever increasing due to tourism and the protection of the endangered white and black Rhinoceros.
