Ulusaba Private Game Reserve is Sir Richard Branson's safari lodge located in the Western sector of the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve.
| Children’s Facilities & Policy |
Children at Ulusaba are categorised according to their ages as follows:
- an infant a guest aged 5 years old and under
- a child a guest aged 6 to 11 years old
- an adult a guest aged 12 years and over
• Children of all ages are very welcome at Rock Lodge however we don’t allow children or infants at Safari Lodge.
• At Rock Lodge your children will be invited to take part in Ulusaba Cub’s Club.
Because Rock Lodge is small and intimate, and because we know each cub is different,
we do not operate a set programme, rather we have a set welcome pack then a range of
great activities that are available on request.
• Children are welcome to participate in game drives but unfortunately are not able to
participate in Safari Walks.
• Infants are not able to participate in our regular game viewing schedule however we do
operate a Kids Programme at Rock Lodge complete with an Ulusaba Activity Book, games,
books and lots more.
• Baby-sitting is available at no extra cost.
• As with any guest, special food and beverage requests can be accommodated, however
we will need advance notice. Simple snacks and light meals for children such as sandwiches can be prepared at the lodge on request.
On arrival at Ulusaba all cubs will be given a Cub’s Club Backpack which contains lots of little goodies to help keep them entertained and to help to educate them about the African Bush. In every cub’s room there will be a special welcome letter and a list of phone numbers they can dial from their room so it is easy for them to get hold of other members of their pride, along with Ulusaba staff. Also for their safety, we have security guards on duty all night that will pay particular attention to rooms occupied by cubs.
Other Cub’s Club features include…
- A welcome treasure hunt to help familiarise themselves with their surroundings.
- Story books in the Lounge which include old favourites and ones with an African or
animal theme.
- Educational books in the Lounge that help them get the most out of their experience in Africa.
- A great range of new and classic children’s DVDs and videos that they can watch in the lounge, along with music CDs.
- We have lots of games up our sleeve and we always try to combine entertainment with
some education.
- Your ranger will be more than happy to spend time with your cubs to tell them all about
the bush and the animals they see.
- We regret that very young cubs (under 6 years) cannot participate in our regular game
viewing programme and due to safety, cubs are not able to participate in Safari Walks, but
we can arrange short excursions around Rock Lodge to spot birds, insects, lizards and so on.
- We can arrange bedtime story telling in the Lounge complete with milk and cookies, or
whatever normally helps get your cubs ready for bed!
- On departure, all cubs will be invited to become permanent members of Ulusaba Cub’s Club
and will receive a bi-annual newsletter and a birthday card.
A babysitting service is available at no extra charge, however please be aware that off-duty staff who have experience with children are used for this. Due to our location we do not have professional child carers available, but with advance notice this could be arranged at an extra cost.
If you have a rather large pride with lots of cubs or if you’d just prefer it, we can arrange a set programme provided we get advance notice – just let us know the ages and interests of the cubs concerned, and we’ll come up with something to keep them entertained.
Remember that all of this is at no extra cost, unless a charge has been mentioned above. And lastly, we understand that every cub is different so if you want anything specific provided for your particular cub then please let us know and we will do everything we can to ensure their stay runs just how you want it.
| ROCK LODGE ROOMS (4 rooms & 4 suites) |
Rock Cliff Rooms: This is the lead-in room category at Rock Lodge. All four of these rooms have stunning south-facing views over the bush, private decks, they are adjoining, spacious and all the bathrooms have views as well. Two of these rooms are built on split levels with spiral staircases connecting the bedroom and bathroom. Three of these rooms’ beds can split into Twins.
Rock Suite: This is a spacious 2 bedroom suite with a separate living area, perfect for a Family. The Master bedroom has a full en suite bathroom, a room with a King Sized bed walking out onto a spacious deck with views over the bush. The second bedroom has a Queen sized bed and smaller en suite bathroom with shower only. The lounge, also walking out onto the deck, is equipped with a CD player and telescope.
Master Suite: A premier suite built on 3 levels with beautiful views, 2 private balconies and living area. The suite is also equipped with a CD player
Makwela Suites: Two ultra-luxurious suites built on 2 levels with private balconies, outdoor showers, infinity plunge pool, living area and separate study/library area. Each suite has a fold-out sleeper couch, suitable for children. In room complimentary internet access and surround sound CD player.
All our rooms and suites have air conditioning, ceiling fans, mosquito nets and built-in low-irritant insect repellent. All rooms are supplied with bottled water, spray-on insect repellent, Virgin Vie Toiletries, hairdryer, bathrobes and slippers. All rooms include tea & coffee making facilities and a complimentary, fully stocked mini-bar.

Please note that children 12 years and older are welcomed at Safari Lodge.
All Safari Lodge rooms are situated on the dry Mabrak Riverbed nestled amongst ancient Jackalberry trees.
Safari Rooms: This is the lead-in room category at Ulusaba. Three adjoining rooms each with a large viewing deck and located close to the main house. Not accessed by a swing bridge. En suite bathrooms with great views!
Elephant Rooms: Three spacious rooms built separately on stilts high above the bush and accessed by swing roped bridge that is quite close to the Lodge. All rooms have large viewing decks and all bathrooms have views.
River Rooms: Four rooms that are very spaciously and privately built on stilts above the bush. River 1 is not accessed by roped swing bridge and quite close to the main house. The rest are accessed by roped swing bridges, with River 4 being a good 4-5 minute walk from the main house and features a zebra bath. All ensure privacy and all bathrooms have views.
Our internationally renowned chefs have developed numerous Pan African dishes influenced by many African cultures, flavors and spices. No dietary requirement is too difficult and all dietary requirements are catered for. Whether dining out under the African sky, in the Boma, on a deck or in the dining room our menus and meals promise to be exciting, social and inspirational. All our breads and pastries are baked daily and we also cater for private meals and special occasions.
We can also arrange Cub’s Cuisine if you wish, such as pizza, toasties, pasta etc. Ulusaba has a feeding chair available complete with wood carved animals! There are no specific restrictions on children’s eating areas, eating times and children’s menus – each family safari is tailor made as we know each cub is different!
Daily Bush Walk which usually commences after breakfast. This fascinating activity allows you to observe the smaller animals that you would usually not see while out on drive. Our knowledgeable ranger and tracker will enthral you with stories about the medicinal properties of plants, local beliefs regarding the wildlife and fascinating facts regarding the animals. No additional charge.
The Community Tour takes place outside the reserve in the local village and offers a fascinating insight into modern Shangaan lifestyle. Prices available upon request.
Beauty Treatments are available in the boutique spa at both Rock Lodge and Safari Lodge. The Aroma Boma Virgin Touch Salon offers Guinot Treatments, plus aromatherapy massages, manicures, pedicures and waxing. Price list available on request.
A Gymnasium is situated at both Rock Lodge and Safari Lodge, which is available for guests to use 24 hours a day. No additional charge.
The Arts and Craft Shop is located at Safari Lodge offering a selection of arts crafts, small gifts and clothing. Prices available in shop.
We have 2 floodlit tennis courts which have tennis rackets, tennis balls and a fully stocked bar! No additional charge.
Ulusaba also offers a selection of helicopter scenic flights in a Bell Jet Ranger and various tours such as a visit to the Cheetah and Endangered Wildlife Breeding Project, a visit to Shangana Village and the Panorama Discoverer Tour which features the Blyde River Canyon, Gods Window and Bourkes Luck Potholes. Please contact our reservations office for more information and prices. Please note that all trips are weather permitting and excursions should be pre-booked to avoid disappointment. Due to the location of Ulusaba in the Sabi Sands Reserve, there is a risk of contracting malaria, which is transmitted by mosquitoes. The risk however varies according to season. The risk of malaria is at its lowest in the Winter months, (May to mid-October), as this is the dry season in the Lowveld. The Summer months (mid October to the end of April) are our high rainfall/high temperature season. Since mosquito’s breed in water and warm temperatures, there is a higher risk of malaria at this time of the year.
Ulusaba has taken great precautions to reduce the risks of malaria, but it is strongly recommended that all guests take prescribed malaria prevention medication. |
Infants are free provided they share with at least one adult.
Children are charged as follows: -
- 1 child sharing with 1 adult is charged R 2,000 plus the Single Occupancy Rate (for the adult).
- 1 child in his/her own room is charged the adult Single Occupancy Rate.
- 2 or more children in their own room are charged the Single Occupancy Rate plus R 2,000 per child per night.
In some rooms we can accommodate children on rollaway or fold out beds. In these cases where adults are paying double or triple rates, extra children will be accommodated at a rate of R2,000 per child, per night. Occasionally due to restrictions on the number of guests and vehicles allowed on Sabi Sand Reserve, we may not be able to accommodate extra children in rooms - please contact us for details.
Individual Bookings:
These rates are per person, per night and are in South African Rand. They include accommodation, as detailed, 14% VAT and a South African Tourism Bed Levy. Flights and transfers to and from Ulusaba are not included.

It is possible to accommodate extra adults and children in some of our double rooms, in these cases the charge will be R2,000 per person, per night with the extra guests being accommodated on fold-out or rollaway beds. Occasionally due to restrictions on the number of guests and vehicles allowed on Sabi Sand Reserve, we may not be able to accommodate extra guests in rooms - please contact us for details.
Exclusive use: These rates are per lodge, per night and are in South African Rand.
Our exclusive use options are ideal for weddings, birthdays, corporate groups or any type of gathering where you might like the place to yourselves! You will get entire use of the lodge for the number of guests stated and your own game vehicles.
Rate per Lodge/per night ZAR 100,000
Safari Lodge can accommodate 20 guests sharing 10 rooms, and Rock Lodge can accommodate between 16 and 20 guests sharing 8 rooms. Additional guests may be accommodated in some rooms. Please speak to your Reservations office for more details.
Ulusaba reserves the right to change rates at any time. Supplements and minimum stays may apply during peak periods.
