Highgate, situated in Oudtshoorn, was established almost 100 years ago by the Hooper family and is a large Ostrich Farming concern producing primarily feathers and ostrich by-products.

During your visit to Highgate, experience the world’s largest bird! The ostrich lays the largest egg, has the most beautiful feathers and eyes that make you want to fall in love and hug them.
At Highgate you can enjoy all of the following:
- Ostrich racing,
- Feeding the ostriches by hand,
- Riding the ostriches at your own risk,
- Visiting the nests and standing on their eggs,
- Touching the ostriches,
- Cuddling the chicks, and
- Watching how dusters and boas are made.
Professional multilingual guides will take you on a conducted tour (approximately 1 ½ hours) where you will learn about the ostriches, experience laughter and take in the beauty of the farm which is situated in a valley surrounded by thousands of ostriches and majestic mountains.
The professional and friendly staffs attend to everyone's needs and discounts are readily available for prized ostrich leather items.
Did you know that an ostrich egg is equivalent to 24 chicken eggs!
Inside our Ostrich 'Palace', which was built in 1902, we have a homely restaurant where many visitors, after visiting the farm, enjoy the original taste of Ostrich dishes. Ostrich steaks were first served at Highgate over 30 years ago.
We have one of the largest & most interesting curio shops in South Africa. Original local curios are made by craftsmen on the farm and the manufacturing of certain items can be seen whilst visiting us.
Highgate sells one of the largest varieties of ostrich leather items in the world. We sell only the best quality and we have a wide range of products to suite everybody's needs.
The ostrich egg shell has become a very popular curio because of the endless uses thereof. Our shells are ideal for artwork, engraving and decoupage. Shells can also be mounted in different ways and make attractive lampshades. Artificial egg shells are also available.
Highgate offers a wide variety of ostrich feathers. Colours vary from natural to extreme. These feathers can be coloured to match any occasion. Our ostrich feather boas are hand made and of the finest quality available. These boas are available in different lengths and colours - the perfect extra for a formal evening.
Five generations of the Hooper Family have owned Highgate. Alex Hooper (4th) and Arenhold Hooper (5th) are actively involved with tending to the smooth operation of the farm. We opened our doors to the public in 1938 and since then have entertained royalty, presidents, prime ministers and soon you, so we look forward to personally meeting you.
